Join us for a festive evening celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a cherished Mexican tradition honoring family, remembrance, and the celebration of life. Adding to the experience, we’ll be joined by a special guest from the tequila industry who will share the fascinating history and heritage of tequila, how it is produced, and how the industry has evolved over the years. Enjoy an evening of culture, conversation, and connection as we learn a little, celebrate together, and raise a glass to this colorful and meaningful tradition.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the key financial and operational decisions involved in launching and scaling a spirits brand, including capital sourcing, production and distribution.
- Describe strategies for recruiting and keeping top talent in a growing company, including how to compete with larger, established employers.
- Evaluate how company culture, equity or incentive structures, and leadership style affect an organization’s ability to attract high-caliber staff.
- Recognize the regulatory, tax and compliance factors specific to the acholic beverage industry, such as federal exercise taxes, TTB oversight and the three-tier distribution system, and how they affect financial planning.
- Apply lessons from an entrepreneurial growth story to talent and growth challenges in their own organizations.

Melanie Shelby
Founder & CEO
Enelalma
On January 16, 2024, Enelalma Tequila officially launched—crafted in the Los Altos region of Jalisco and built without shortcuts or compromise. Añejo followed in August 2025, with Reposado slated for Q3 2026 as part of a deliberate portfolio expansion.
To date, we have raised $1.4M from friends, family, angel investors, and lead investors—and sold more than 4,000 bottles through disciplined self-distribution—demonstrating early market validation and operational execution within the prestige segment.
Before entrepreneurship, I operated at the intersection of strategy, governance, and economic access across airports, utilities, food and beverage, insurance, stadiums, and arenas—industries where regulation defines opportunity. That work generated more than $12.7 billion in economic impact for diverse suppliers, expanding access to market share, ownership, and scale.
Service remains foundational to my leadership. I served as Board Chair of the Alameda Health System Foundation, supporting a $1.5 billion public health system across Alameda County, and held both governmental and gubernatorial appointments advancing equity, economic development, and sound public policy. Additionally, I served on the Board of Trustees of the State Bar of California, contributing to governance oversight of the nation’s largest state bar.
